eGR: The UK casino affiliate space is now extremely saturated, but I guess it was very different when you began in 2001.
Richard Skelhorn (RS): I was actually the first. There was a few American affiliates doing it in the US, but there was nobody optimising their site for UK casinos. At the time, I only had about £1,000 on my credit card to spend on traffic, so I built the website and went in and asked for CPA deals to get a quick return, as waiting for a rev share could have taken months. Back then you could buy the word ‘casino’ for 5p. Now you pay £35 on Google!
eGR: What particularly stands out for you during your 10 years in the industry?
RS: We’ve had some huge setbacks, from UIGEA shutting off America, to Google closing its advertising in 2004. There’ve been a number of times when I’ve woken up to news that could effectively end the business. We lost 40% of our revenues following UIGEA, but some people lost 90%, and they’re the ones you have to respect. They dug in, found ways of getting players and operating. I have to wonder how many industries could survive America being shut!
