Spain Q2 GGR down 5.6% YoY as low sports betting margins continue to stunt market
Sports betting revenue plummeted 34% while new player accounts decreased 5.6% partly due to the country’s strict advertising restrictions

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the Spanish market dropped by 5.6% year-on-year (YoY) in Q2 2022, as sports betting continued on a gradual decline.
The data provided by Spain’s regulator, the Director General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), showed that GGR for the second quarter of 2022 amounted to €204m (£176.7m).
Breaking down GGR by vertical, sports betting revenue continued its steady decline, recording €60.9m, which is a 33.8% YoY drop. This figure also represents a 6.7% decline on the sector’s Q1 return of €65.2m.
Casino accounted for €117.2m of total GGR, rising 17.3% YoY, and a slight increase on the €110.97m posted in Q1 2022.
Bingo saw a 2.7% YoY increase to €3.4m but was down 6.6% on Q1 2022.
Poker also saw a rise YoY of 10.8%, reaching €22.5m, while it was down 7.9% compared to Q1 2022.
The monthly average of active player accounts was 996,149, a slight drop of 2.4% compared to Q1 and almost at the same level as Q2 2021.
Furthermore, new player registrations saw a considerable drop in Q2 2022, with 438,172 signing up to play in Spain, a 5.5% quarter-on-quarter drop and a massive 26% fall YoY.
The data presented by the DGOJ also detailed the marketing expenditure in Q2 2022.
Overall marketing expenditure fell by 30.3% YoY to €89.6m. When breaking this down, it can be seen that the ban on many forms of advertising that was imposed last year has hit spending heavily. As a result, sponsorship spending plummeted to €380,000 in Q2 2022.
The DGOJ noted that in Q2 2022, there were 78 licensed operators in the country.
