Betway under investigation for allowing customer to gamble £370,000 of stolen money
Employee of a cake decorating company sentenced to prison after stealing money and gambling it over three-year period

Betway is facing an investigation from the UK Gambling Commission over claims it allowed a customer to gamble away £370,000 in stolen money.
Customer Benjamin Jones defrauded his employer, a cake decorating company, out of the money over a period of three years, Nottingham Crown Court heard this week.
Prosecutor Katrina Wilson told the court, per the Nottingham Post: “Betway was not checking the authenticity of the money being used by this defendant.”
The Cake Decorating Company, Colwick, is now seeking civil action to regain the money from Betway, Wilson said.
Company owner Daniel White said the Gambling Commission was carrying out its own investigation into the incident, adding: “Gambling companies have a regulatory duty to prevent stolen money from being gambled.
“Adequate money laundering checks were not carried out which left us vulnerable to this crime.”
The Gambling Commission declined to comment on the existence of the investigation.
A Betway spokesperson said the company was aware of the matter and investigating it further.
“As a responsible, licensed operator Betway does not seek, nor does it wish to profit, from any illicit funds wagered on its sites,” the spokesperson said.
“Where we establish that stolen funds have been used, we will actively take steps to ensure that the victims are reimbursed.”
Jones was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing the money.
