Betsson and Betway join growing list of German sports betting licensees
Betsson registers seven brands under German web domains after approval from Regional Council of Darmstadt
Betsson Group and Betway have become the latest operators to be awarded a German sports betting licence by the Regional Council of Darmstadt.
The duo join a growing list of licensees, with bet365, Entain and BetVictor among 15 operators previously awarded licences by the council, in October 2020.
Other operators added to the list in this latest tranche of licence awards include Betkick, Interwetten and NetXbetting, as well as Tipico subsidiaries in Frankfurt, Karlsruhe and Munich.
Betsson, operating in Germany under its Wegame subsidiary, has registered .de domains for the Betsson, Betsafe, Casinowinner, Guts, Nordicbet, Rizk and Schnellwetten brands.
“We are pleased to finally receive this licence and we are preparing to relaunch our German sportsbook shortly under German regulation,” Betsson CEO Pontus Lindwall said.
“Operating sports betting in Germany is part of our strategy of strengthening our position in existing markets by prioritising segments where Betsson has the best conditions to offer leading products.
“We look forward to offering German customers great entertainment,” Lindwall added.
Betsson’s German market revenue has declined by 70% since the operator implemented measures to conform to transitional standards.
The measures, which include strict deposit and stake limits, came into force in December and have led to declines reported by operators across the board.
By implementing these temporary standards, operators hope to secure an early online casino and sports betting licence when the national market goes live in July, with German regulators prioritising those who conform to the transitional restrictions.
Addressing Betway’s own ambitions for the German market, CEO Anthony Werkman said he was “thrilled” to receive a licence from the Darmstadt regulator and has now registered a .de domain.

Betway currently has sponsorship agreements in place with Bundesliga sides SV Werder Bremen, Hertha BSC and VfB Stuttgart.
