Sportsbook helps Spain Q1 revenues grow 14%
Total GGR increases to 77.4m during the three month period as turnover grows 25% to 1.9bn
Revenues in Spain’s online gaming market grew 14% in Q1 2015 driven by continued growth in the sports betting vertical and a 34% increase in marketing spend, according to the latest figures from the country’s regulator.
The Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) reported Q1 gross gaming revenues rose 14% year-on-year to 77.4m with total turnover up 25% to 1.9bn.
Sports betting continued to dominate the market during the three month period, accumulating GGR of 45.5m, up 20% on the same period last year and 32% sequentially.
Poker was the next in line with 16.8m of GRR, a 5% year-on-year decline, while the country’s slots-less casino market increased 38% to 12.2m.
Spain’s online bingo market remained relatively flat with revenues down 3% YoY to 2m.
The regulator also revealed details on marketing spend, with operators said to have invested 22.3m on “advertising, sponsorship and promotion” in the first quarter, up 34% on the previous year.
The Spanish market is set for a major boost in the second half of the year after legislation allowing operators to offer slots games and exchange betting came into force at the end of May.
The regulator is expected to announce the firms awarded slots and exchange licences later today, with around a dozen new operators including Eurobet and BetClic Everest also expected to enter the market.
