Interwetten eyes European expansion after World Cup success
Sports betting firm confident of entering Germany and two other European markets as H1 mobile revenues soar
Sports betting operator Interwetten is confident of entering Germany and two other European markets after the World Cup and a new mobile app provided significant boosts to its H1 revenues.
In the first six months of 2014 the Maltese operator’s revenues exceed 22m, up 12% on the figure recorded in the corresponding period last year after the firm enjoyed a “dream World Cup”.
Newly-designed online and mobile products, released in February this year, also boosted the firm’s turnover with more than 60% of stakes placed during the tournament derived from mobile devices.
“We recognised the shift towards mobile technology early on and made the right strategic decisions that are bearing fruit today,” Werner Becher, spokesperson at Interwetten, said.
Becher also confirmed that Interwetten was confident of acquiring one of the 20 online sports betting licences up for grabs in Germany and due to be awarded in September this year.
“In this case, the legal stability required for long-term investment in this core market would finally be in place,” Becher said.
Interwetten also said it was “homing in” on a return to two other European markets from which it had previously withdrawn, but did not disclose precise details of those jurisdictions.
