Betfred hands Sportech £9m UK Tote deal
Bookmaker outsources its Totepool technology platform to Sportech in 10-year multi-channel deal

Betfred will outsource its entire UK Tote technology platform to Sportech in a deal announced today for Sportech to supply its multi-channel tote betting services to the bookmaker’s Totepool business.
The 10-year contract, which is estimated to be worth around £9m, will see Sportech’s Racing & Digital division replace Betfred’s existing tote systems from next year.
Betfred gained the exclusive rights to operate all Tote betting on British horseracing after it acquired the Tote for £265m in 2011, and had been seeking ways to consolidate the operations under one provider.
Sportech will provide Totepool with a new digital framework for betting on mobile devices, online and through self-service terminals using its Quantum System and proprietary Digital Link betting technology.
The integration of Sportech’s services also is expected to make Totepool products available for distribution to worldwide markets while the operator will also provide on-going support and maintenance for the duration for the deal.
“The new Quantum System, coupled with the Digital Link and G4 modules will anchor our tote offering going forward, and with the additional flexibility and market reach it gives us, we expect significant growth in our pools products,” Philip Siers, managing director of Totepool, said.
The news will provide a further boost to Sportech, which recently announced major supplier deals with US racecourse and casino group Penn National Gaming and Danish state-controlled gambling operator Danske Spil.
“Sportech processes $13 billion of bets annually for racing customers in 25 countries, and now I am delighted we are able to add the UK Tote and Betfred to our list of partners,” Ian Penrose, Sportech CEO, said.
“Betfred has a number of ambitious plans, and we are pleased to be able to assist them to improve the customer experience for Tote betting on UK Horseracing,” he added.
