Optimove iGaming Pulse Report: Average casino deposits up 10% on last month
In a monthly column, Optimove looks at how casino and sports KPIs performed in August 2021

August was a special month, with many somewhat contradicting factors, leading to a mixed bag of trends we can see in the data. On one hand, when comparing it to July in our month over month comparisons, it goes against a very strong July which had the later stages of the European Football Championship.
On the other, August also enjoyed a week and a half of exciting Olympic Games – so when compared to last year, of course it shows. Elsewhere, some huge Olympic moments took place late July. But then, in August we had the kick-off of many sports leagues around the world, most notably those of European football.
Oh, and did we mention Leo Messi?
So, let’s find out how the following KPIs performed.
Sports KPIs
Monthly deposits
The average number of monthly deposits for sports bettors decreased by 1% MoM and increased by 7% YoY, now standing at 9.6 monthly deposits per player.
Monthly net gaming revenue per player
There has been a decrease of 1% MoM in average revenue per active player and an increase of 13% YoY, now standing at €89 per player.
While countries such as England and Italy – which enjoyed fantastic performances by their respective national football teams in the Euro Championship, both reaching the final where Italy won in a penalty shootout – saw inevitable decreases MoM, in Spain we were able to spot different trends.
When it comes to net revenue per player, the numbers coming from Spain show a 19% decrease YoY, standing on a very high average of €123 per player.
Average deposit amount
The average deposit amount for sports players increased by 5% MoM and by 16% YoY, now standing at €43.
Again, data coming from Spain shows stronger trends compared to Italy and England, with a 6% increase MoM and a 2% increase YoY, again standing on a strong average of €55.
For context, we see Spain’s data not showing similar post-Euro trend as we see from the UK and Italy, so while the Spanish national team also made it very far in the tournament, two things could stand out here: (a) Spain did make it to the semi-finals, but did it with mediocre performances, not winning any of its three knock-out games in 90 minutes and (b) – secondly, the turmoil around Leo Messi’s historic departure of Barcelona garnered unprecedented pre-season interest for Spanish football.
