
Optimove iGaming Pulse Report: Average sports deposits up 41% YoY in Canada on the back of NHL playoffs
In a monthly column, Optimove shares the latest insights from its iGaming Pulse Report looking at how casino and sports KPIs performed in May


In May, The French Open (Roland Garros) tennis games took place in Paris, while over in North America, the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs of the National Hockey League (NHL) were played.
Let’s dig deeper into the following KPIs to see how the online sports and casino sectors performed.
Sports KPIs
Monthly deposits
The average number of monthly deposits for sports bettors increased by 3% MoM and by 10% YoY, now standing at 10.1 monthly deposits per player.
Monthly net gaming revenue per player
There has been an increase of 7% MoM in average revenue per active player during May and an increase of 12% YoY, now standing at €94 per player.
In France, where the Roland Garros tennis matches were played, we can see an increase of 14% MoM in average revenue per active player during May and an increase of a whopping 239% YoY, now standing at €166 per player.
Average deposit amount
The average deposit amount for sports players increased by 9% MoM and by 15% YoY, now standing at €38.
Over in Canada, the NHL playoffs sparked enthusiasm among tons of Canadian sports bettors who anticipated some long-awaited hockey action.
This could be seen in the average deposit amount that increased by 12% MoM and a massive 41% YoY, now standing at €104. Therefore, we can conclude that Canadian players were probably depositing higher amounts in order to place more bets on their favourite hockey teams.
Retention rates
Retention rates for sports bettors have remained the same MoM and increased by 10% YoY, now standing at 67%.
New retention rates
New retention rates have decreased by 8% MoM and by 10% YoY, now standing at 37%.
Conversion rates
Conversion rates increased by 9% MoM and by 9% YoY, now standing at 47%.
Number of activity days
This month, the number of activity days decreased by 1% MoM and increased by 31% YoY, now standing at 8.1.
Mobile bet rate
For this report, this KPI is defined as the total mobile bet amount during May, divided by the total bet amount. Looking at the data, the rate decreased by 1% MoM and increased by 6% YoY, now standing at 67%.
Casino KPIs
Average deposit amount
The average deposit amount for casino players increased by 9% MoM and by 19% YoY, now standing at €38.
Monthly deposit per player
The average number of monthly deposits per player in May slightly increased by 3% MoM and by 13% YoY, now standing at 10.5 deposits per player.
Monthly revenue
The average net gaming revenue per active player decreased by 4% MoM and increased by 15% YoY, now standing at €99.
Conversion rates
Conversion rates increased by 5% MoM but decreased by 2% YoY, now standing at 41%.
Retention rates
Retention rates have remained the same MoM and increased by 12% YoY, now standing at 67%.
New retention rates
New retention rates decreased by 5% MoM but increased by 9% YoY, now standing at 35%.
