888 launches sportsbook in Italy
Operator also seeks regulatory approval to promote COO Itai Frieberger to role of chief exec
888 launched its sports betting product in Italy this morning, and has also moved to promote chief operating officer (COO) Itai Frieberger to the role of CEO.
888 confirmed to eGaming Review that it had soft-launched its sportsbook in Italy today, with plans to ramp up marketing later this week.
“If everything goes smoothly towards the end of the week we will gradually start opening marketing activities,” 888 head of B2C Itai Pazner told eGaming Review.
The operator previously said it hoped launching sports in Italy would help drive players to its casino site, which has performed well but proved costly in terms of player signups.
The launch comes amid reports 888 is also currently seeking regulatory approval to promote COO Itai Frieberger to the role of chief executive officer.
According to UK newspaper the Telegraph, the firm is attempting to gain clearance in the jurisdictions where it holds gambling licences, a process that could take months.
If approved, Frieberger will succeed former chief exec Brian Mattingley, who stepped back from the day to day running of the business in May last year when he became non-executive chairman.
