Dutch national lottery eyes online diversification
Operator looking for external suppliers after identifying a need to expand its product portfolio to compete following re-regulation
The Netherlands’ national lottery Staatsloterij will launch a number of new online gaming products through third-party suppliers when the market re-regulates early next year.
The diversification will be part of an attempt to “meet the changing demands of consumers” with a host of international operators looking to enter the market next year.
While Staatsloterij has not yet revealed the nature of these games, eGaming Review understands that they will not initially include casino games such as slots and blackjack despite new regulation due to come into force early next year which will legalise such products.
The operator outlined its plans in its 2013 annual report, stating that it intended to contract various suppliers over the coming years to provide the new games after deeming the offering to “require more than the current organisation can independently handle”.
“Co-operation with other parties is an important condition for these strategic objectives to [be] realised,” the report said.
“Preparing these collaborations and the joint provision of new games requires adequate preparation, time and the necessary investment.”
The operator also revealed that while such games will provide additional sources of revenue, their comparatively “extremely high” pay-out ratio will require new efficiencies within the company and that its current operating model for gaming is not sufficient.
“Time is pressing and significant investments are necessary to be ready for opening time on this new market,” the report added.
