Exclusive: Betsson plots product and technology executive reshuffle
Chief product and technology officer Peter Frey departs after two years as Malta-headquartered operator looks to pivot towards improved customer experience

Betsson Group chief product officer and chief technology officer Peter Frey will stand down from his dual roles with the Malta-headquartered operator, EGR can exclusively reveal.
Frey, who has been with Betsson since May 2019, has overseen the product development of more than 20 Betsson Group brands operating in 12 licensed markets in Europe, Africa and South America.
In his capacity as CPO and CTO, he was responsible for 650 employees working in more than 50 development teams located at Betsson’s offices in Malta, Stockholm, Tallinn, Budapest and Kiev.
During his tenure in the dual role, Betsson’s development department increased by 150 employees, with Frey overseeing the merger of the product and technology department into a single entity.
In addition, Frey worked as part of a group establishing cross-functional development teams, the implementation of a global distributed cloud strategy and the development of next-generation mobile native Betsson apps for iOS and Android.
EGR has learned that Frey’s dual role will now be split into two separate roles as part of a wider focus on improving Betsson’s customer experience.
Current director of platform and infrastructure Fredrik Ögren has been promoted to replace Frey as CTO. Ögren joined Betsson in 2019 and will start his new position as CTO on 1 July.
Betsson has triggered a recruitment process for a new chief product officer, who will work extensively with Ögren on both product and technology matters.
While the recruitment process is ongoing, Ögren will serve as acting CPO with all teams reporting directly to him. A separate process to fill the director of platform and infrastructure role will begin immediately.
Betsson Group CEO Jesper Svensson paid tribute to the outgoing Frey, hailing his role in scaling up the business during his tenure in the dual role.
“I want to thank Peter for his contributions the past years and wish him all the best with his future endeavours,” Svensson said.
“With the progress we have made so far within the tech and product areas, and the foundation now being in a better place, this is a good time to even further enhance the focus on customer experience.
“Therefore, we will recruit a new chief product officer who, together with Fredrik, will be able to take our products to the next level, and which at the same time will allow Fredrik to focus deeper on the crucially important tech side,” Svensson added.
