Hundreds of Veikkaus staff facing redundancy in 2022 streamlining process
Finnish monopoly operator ends negotiations with employees as it plans to save €15m by 2024

Veikkaus has confirmed up to 190 employees will face redundancy after completing a streamlining process of the business.
In August, the Finnish monopoly operator entered discussions with 830 Veikkaus employees regarding the reduction of headcount at the company as a cost-saving measure.
Veikkaus noted sustainability measures had reduced the volume of play in its retail operations by around 40%, hence the need to adjust operational output.
Veikkaus said that between 125 and 190 employees could be handed redundancies, depending on some staff accepting new positions or internal transfers within the company.
Additionally, up to 160 further employees will see the terms of their employment change “significantly”, with new measures coming into effect in January 2022 at the latest.
Veikkaus said the streamlining would result in cost savings of approximately €15m by 2024, with the operator also set to close 15 of its own physical gaming halls, with further details set to be published in the future.
Jari Heino, Veikkaus director of channels and sales, said: “Our goal is to renew and build a forward-looking, strongly vibrant Veikkaus as a responsible, modern and efficient company with the support of Finns.
“The reforms are designed so that support is available to those leaving the company. In principle, most of the Veikkaus employees who were involved in the negotiations are offered new positions within the company.
“The responsible casino of the new era will provide a good framework and a job for many. Now it is important to look ahead and ensure Veikkaus’ vitality today and tomorrow,” he added.
