OPAP suspends betting on Russian sporting events amid Ukraine conflict
Greece’s biggest gaming company halts all betting on Russian sporting events in solidarity with Ukraine

Greek betting company OPAP has announced it will no longer be taking bets on Russian sporting events as of 28 February 2022.
The move has been made in solidarity with Ukraine, where Russian invasion has continued into its fifth day.
OPAP has ceased taking wagers on any sporting event related to Russian competitions effective immediately. This includes the Russian Premier Liga, VTB United League and the volleyball Pro League.
A statement released on the firm’s website reads: “In these extremely difficult times, all of our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people. At OPAP, we express our full support to the Ukrainian citizens and their indisputable right [to] freedom.”
It was confirmed that any bets that have already been placed on Russian sporting events remain valid.
A further statement added: “We understand that this symbolic move may result in certain limitations for our customers, but all of us at OPAP hope that given the extraordinary circumstances, this move would be understood and supported.”
The announcement comes in the wake of several firms rallying round Ukraine. This includes Playtech offering its employees who are based in Kyiv the opportunity to relocate to their offices in Bulgaria, Estonia and Romania.
In addition, Parimatch has donated UAH30m (£743,870) to help the country with essential food and medicines and ammunition.
Parimatch will also help volunteer organisations, charitable foundations and private businesses in aiding civilians.
