Report: German online casino market worth €5bn by 2024
New study surveys 385 online casino users throughout February as Tipico is confirmed as online casino market leader

Germany’s online casino market could be worth €5bn by 2024, according to a new report published by European telecommunications advisory group Goldmedia.
The report, commissioned by affiliate site CasinoOnline.de, suggests legalisation could increase online gambling’s total market share by more than 6% over the next five years as land-based activity decreases.
This is buoyed in part by a 17.3% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) rise in the sports betting sector, together with a 7.9% CAGR increase in the casino sector and an 8.3% CAGR rise in slot machine sector growth over the next five years.
In addition to the market forecast, the report surveyed 385 online casino users over a month-long period in February.
The survey found that online slots users also used other gambling products with a similar frequency. Between 8-12% said they also played online lotteries, online casino games or online poker daily, while 15% claimed to bet on sporting events online daily.
Roughly half (43%) of online slot respondents used just one operator, with 29% of respondents using two operators and 17% using three.
The survey found Tipico’s online slots were the most popular, with 39% of respondents indicating they regularly used its online slots games. Other operators most frequently used by survey respondents included Mr Green (29%), bwin (24%) and Wunderino (21%).
Bet365 (17%), Betway (15%) and LeoVegas (12%) were among international operators offering online slots games used by survey respondents.
Thirty-nine percent of online slot users surveyed indicated they had chosen their slots games as a result of online advertising, with 31% doing so through other channels. A total of 28% of survey respondents cited recommendations made by friends as the primary reason for picking an online slots game.
Smartphones were confirmed as the most popular method of playing online slots (65%), beating laptop usage (46%) and desktop PCs (36%).
The survey also examined the effectiveness of the proposed €1,000 per month deposit limit on all online casino gambling, as included within the revised Interstate Treaty on Gambling.
Almost 80% of online slots users surveyed deposited less than €100 per month, while 12% said they played without depositing any money. Less than 1% of survey respondents deposited in excess of €1,000 a month.
