Smarkets hires new compliance chief from William Hill
William Chambers to oversee regulatory compliance, safer gambling and AML processes at London-based betting firm

Smarkets has bolstered its compliance department with the hire of William Chambers from William Hill.
Chambers will occupy the chief compliance officer position at the exchange-led betting operator, taking over from previous incumbent Chris Baldacchino.
Chambers arrived at Smarkets on 11 October from William Hill, where he held the role of group compliance director for nine months after joining the firm in February 2021 from ride-hailing service Uber.
Prior to that, the Kingston University alumnus spent more than three years as head of compliance for Betway Group.
Chambers will report into the wider Smarkets management team in his new role and will be responsible for the regulatory compliance, safer gambling, AML and operational compliance teams, as well as growing the Smarkets compliance function across Europe and the US.
“I’ve watched Smarkets for some time and have been really impressed by the team and culture of the business,” said Chambers.
“It’s pretty remarkable what they have achieved so far in this industry given their size and funding to date. Lots of companies talk about innovation, but here it is actually being practised.
“The opportunity right now is huge, not just because new markets are opening across the US, but also because there is the chance to bring customers a better experience in more mature markets,” he added.
In June, Smarkets closed a significant minority investment from Susquehanna Growth Equity (SGE) via a Series B funding round to support its expansion throughout the US and internationally.
