Spanish sports betting revenues up 47% in Q2
55% rise in marketing spend fuels double-digit rises in all egaming verticals

Spanish sports betting revenues rose by 46.7% year-on-year during the second quarter of 2018, according to new figures from the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ).
Sports betting revenues rose to €87.6m during the period, with pre-match betting rising by 32.7% during the quarter, rises which the regulator attributed to the FIFA World Cup in Russia. In addition, revenues from live betting rose 20.64% year-on-year to €47.5m during the quarter.
Overall egaming revenues also rose sharply during the period, rising by 40.1% year-on-year to €167.2m.
Revenues from online casino increased by 36.9% year-on-year during the quarter to €56.5m, with the largest share of this revenue being generated by online slots at 51%.
Online poker revenues increased by 34.8% year-on-year to €19.5m during the quarter, however this figure was a 9.4% decrease on the online poker revenues reported in Q1 2018. Declines were reported in cash games, which fell 18.1% and tournament poker, which fell by 3.8% during Q2, in part thanks to seasonality.
In January, Spain commenced shared poker liquidity operations with its nearest neighbours France and Portugal, however since then only two operators, Winamax and partypoker have commenced operations.
Revenues derived from online bingo rose 16.9% year-on-year to €3.3m in the second quarter of 2018.
One factor which may have been the catalyst for these rises was a 55.2% year-on-year rise in marketing spend by egaming companies, who spent €81.3m during the quarter.
In addition to this, the number of customer registrations increased by 33.3% year-on-year in Q2 2018, rising by 260,000, with the number of so-called ‘regulars’ rising by 31.7% to 860,000.
