Third of French Euro 2020 viewers to also bet on tournament
Research commissioned by the country’s regulator shows majority of bettors will use online operators during competition

Almost a third of French adults intending to watch Euro 2020 are also set to bet on the tournament as the growth of sports betting in the country continues to snowball.
According to a survey commissioned by French regulator ANJ and actioned by Harris Interactive, 31% of the 48% of people planning to follow Les Bleus this summer said they also intended to place a bet with a bookmaker during the tournament.
Additionally, 63% of those who said they intended to bet would do so via an online operator.
The rise of online sports betting in France was reflected in data garnered from Q1 2021, with there being 2.5 million active sports betting accounts live in the country and sports betting returning GGR of €357m.
Following the release of the survey, the ANJ detailed how it would continue to ensure safe gambling practices in the country and reminded both players and operators of their responsibilities.
The ANJ said: “Before the Euros, the ANJ reminded operators of the need for their commercial communications to stress the importance of maintaining a moderate and controlled gambling practice and that the bonus or welcome offers they offer are sufficiently clear so that players understand the commitments they underpin.
“During the Euros, the ANJ will monitor the various financial bonuses for punters such as welcome or loyalty bonuses. It will be very vigilant on the follow-up by the operators of the TRJ (player return rate) which must not exceed 85% in sports betting. In general, the ANJ considers that the growth of the market would justify a limitation of financial rewards.”
The ANJ also noted it would continue to monitor tipster sites which have grown in stature in the French market recently, as some of the sites present “deceptive marketing practices” for players.
