Streaming platform launches crackdown against gambling streaming following months of fierce debate

Global streaming platform Twitch has taken a major step in cracking down on the promotion of gambling content by streamers.
The platform and its streamers have come under pressure in recent months as the debate around the responsibility and legality of streaming gambling content, particularly in regards to crypto, has continued to rage considering the average age of Twitch’s target-market users.
In a creator update shared by Twitch, the company announced it would prohibit links and referrals codes to gambling websites being used on the platform.
The statement read: “To prevent harm and scams created by questionable gambling services that sponsor content on Twitch, we will prohibit sharing links and/or referral codes to sites that offer slots, roulette or dice games.
“We will continue to monitor gambling-related content and update our approach as needed.”
The new changes will come into effect on 17 August, giving creators a period of time to remove the offending content from their channels.
In June, Slovakia banned Twitch entirely after one streamer broadcast themselves playing poker.
