
US District Court rules Wire Act only applies to sports betting
Judge rejects 2018 DOJ reinterpretation that the Wire Act extends to online poker, lottery and other forms of gaming


The District Court of New Hampshire has ruled in favour of the New Hampshire Lottery Commission’s (NHLC) argument that the Wire Act only applies to sports betting.
The court held that the Wire Act is limited to sports wagering and found that state lottery and vendors were exempt from the act.
The ruling also clears the path for online poker and other forms of online gaming to be carried out across state lines – something which had been thrown into doubt by the original reinterpretation last year.
Pennsylvania for instance had forced online operators to establish new servers within state boundaries, while payments and multi-state poker liquidity was also impacted.
