New Jersey casino sites subject to cyber attack
Four licensed online casino sites subjected to Distributed Denial of Service attacks over the weekend
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) is investigating cyber-attacks launched against four online casino sites in the state over the weekend, the regulator has confirmed. [private]
The Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack lasted 30 minutes and were followed by the threat of a more powerful and sustained attack to be initiated 24 hours later if a Bitcoin ransom was not paid.
The regulator said the follow-up attack had the potential to ânegatively impact the targeted casinosâ as well as other businesses in Atlantic City that shared the same IP address.
But a joint effort by the DGE, the State Police, FBI, the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security & Preparedness, the Board of Public Utilities, IP providers and casino IT staff brought the attack to an end with âno significant disruption to servicesâ.
âAll involved remain on heightened alert but are relieved that the holiday weekend has passed without incident,â David Rebuck, DGE director, said in a statement.
