FanDuel and DraftKings await their fate in New York
Federal Judge will issue decision on whether to block the sites from the state âvery soonâ
DraftKings and FanDuel will have to wait a little longer to find out whether they will be blocked from offering contests to players in New York after a federal judge refused to give an immediate ruling. [private]
Yesterdayâs hearing was held on a request by New York Attorney (AG) General Eric Schneiderman for an injunction against both operators that would effectively force them to shut up shop in the state.
The hearing took place over two hours, with each side given one hour to present their case. The New York AG went first, and was followed by FanDuel and DraftKings.
Following the hearing Judge Manuel Mendez told the court he would deliver his decision âvery soonâ but did not set a specific date for when he would make the announcement.
âToday, we presented compelling evidence that DFS competitions are as legal now as they have been for the past seven years that New Yorkers have been playing them,â DraftKings said in a statement.
A spokesman for Schneiderman said the AG was glad to have the opportunity to make its case to the court that DraftKings and FanDuel are operating illegal gambling operations âin clear violation of the lawâ.
The hearing comes after Schneiderman issued cease and desist orders to FanDuel and DraftKings at the start of the month following his ruling that DFS was âillegal gamblingâ under state law.
Both operators subsequently filed lawsuits against the AG, who in turn filed for an injunction against the pair seeking to block them from operating in the state.
But Judge Mendez refused to grant the temporary restraining order, and instead scheduled yesterdayâs hearing to discuss the situation in more detail.
FanDuel has subsequently withdrawn from New York, however DraftKings remains active in the state.
