Florida gears up for 2016 online lotto push

Legislation seeking to allow Florida residents to purchase lottery tickets online has been introduced by Senator Gwen Margolis for the third time. [private]
SB 207 contains the same language as its predecessor, and if adopted would allow the Department of the Lottery to âadminister a programâ allowing Florida residents to purchase tickets online.
Margolis told eGR North America her bill has a much better chance of passing next year after issues with the state budget in regards to expanding health care services brought an early end to the 2015 session.
âFloridaâs economy has continued to recover and grow, but the financial needs of the state continue to press us to be judicious with our appropriations,â Margolis told eGR NA.
âThis bill creates growth in the lottery with increased revenue directly increasing funding for education in Florida.
âNew technologies have paved the way for safe online purchasing while also ensuring only those who are eligible to play do so,â she added.
Margolisâ 2016 efforts should be boosted by news that the Florida Lottery itself is considering online ticket sales in a bid to combat flat-lining sales.
But with Florida Governor Rick Scott seemingly opposed to online gaming, it will be a hard-fought battle if SB 207 is to pass into law next year.
