PointsBet expands into Virginia with Colonial Downs Group
Australia-headquartered operator awarded temporary supplier license by Virginia Lottery

PointsBet has expanded its US sports betting operations into Virginia after receiving a temporary supplier license from the Virginia Lottery.
The Australia-headquartered operator, working through its PointsBet Virginia LLC subsidiary, has confirmed an exclusive partnership agreement with Colonial Downs Group LLC, paving the way for a joint application for licensure in the Old Dominion State.
PointsBet has already confirmed plans to utilize media and digital assets from its US media partner NBC Sports as part of its Virginia push, as well as Hispanic media assets including the Telemundo Deportes and Telemundo broadcast stations.
PointsBet US CEO Johnny Aitken cited the Virginia licensure as a “great achievement and responsibility” for the firm.
“Alongside Colonial Downs, PointsBet is proud to partner with the Lottery in Virginia for our first lottery-regulated market license award,” Aitken explained.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to further expand our exclusive relationship with NBC Sports – a staple to sports lovers in Virginia – and ultimately provide the great people in the state with the sportsbook they’ve been waiting for,” he added.
PointsBet currently operates in eight US states including Virginia’s neighbor, West Virginia.
However, the firm has been experiencing declines in market share across all US markets, thanks in part to escalating customer acquisition and marketing activity from some of the larger operators in the market.
Earlier this month, PointsBet was one of nine operators to receive a highly sought after mobile sports betting license in the state of New York, as part of a mega-consortium involving platform applicant Kambi and operators Rush Street Interactive, Caesars, and WynnBet.
