This year, EGR celebrated 20 years of serving the dynamic and ever-changing online gambling industry. We took a moment to reflect on just how far we’ve come and how much the sector has changed, from the creation of locally regulated markets and improving diversity standards across the board to having responsible gambling embedded within companies; the evolution has been wide-ranging and stark.
However, over the last few tumultuous years, thanks to Covid, some trends are slowing – including the positive impact lockdowns had on operators’ top and bottom lines. Our 19th annual snapshot of the key industry power players and how they are performing against their competitors better reflects what’s going on in the world to date.
As for key developments since the previous edition of the EGR Power 50 this time last year, political upheaval in the UK has contributed to the much-anticipated – and much-needed – white paper into the Gambling Act 2005 review being delayed time and time again. Certain operators have tried to pre-empt the tightening of gambling laws by stepping up safer gambling protocols, including slashing slots stakes and introducing monthly loss limits for younger players, yet the UK sector has been left in a holding pattern, resulting in “uncertainty for everyone involved”, as Flutter Entertainment CEO Peter Jackson put it in August.

With UK travails and regulatory headwinds in European markets putting a dent in companies’ finances, the US market continues to be the industry’s golden goose. Few people could have predicted that four-and-a-half years after PASPA’s demise 31 states and the District of Columbia would have regulated sports betting. Plus, sports betting is legal but not yet operational in another five states. However, the seemingly insurmountable challenge across the pond – if you aren’t FanDuel, DraftKings or BetMGM – is disrupting the dominance of this trio and, thus, the brakes have been firmly applied to rein in the hitherto unbridled spending to acquire customers.
There has also been a pronounced slowdown in M&A activity of late as credit dries up and worsening macroeconomic conditions create uncertainty. Indeed, the SPAC craze to take operators public fuelled by the US sports betting boom now seems passé, while share prices and market caps have plummeted this year after riding the highs of over-inflated Covid gains. But despite all the challenges 2022 has thrown at the industry, it hasn’t prevented operators from iterating their products, investing in the wellbeing of their staff and bolstering their safer gambling measures.
As with every year, EGR has retained its established formula of judging each company by its international reach (whereby regulated markets are given a greater weight than grey and black markets), strategy and impact, market influence and leadership, and financial prowess. For the latter criteria, the Power 50 relies heavily on the expertise of accountancy heavyweight BDO to assist EGR with calculating the most crucial numbers. So read on to find out which industry movers and shakers ranked where in this year’s EGR Power 50.
EGR would like to thank EveryMatrix for sponsoring this year’s Power 50, and BDO for helping us compile the rankings by crunching the most crucial numbers. BDO is one of the world’s largest accountancy and business advisory firms and is a leading service provider to the online gaming sector.
